CLASSICAL
HARP & PIANO

Olivia Lu has been teaching classical piano and harp lessons to students of all ages and abilities since 1994 in both English and Chinese. Her educational philosophy is to help students develop sight reading skills, technical skills, and a passion for music.

FROM BEGINNER
TO CARNEGIE HALL

With beginner students as young as four years old, Olivia teaches strong foundations in basic music reading skills and music theory. For older and more accomplished students, Olivia teaches advanced music theory and encourages them to take part in competitions and commercial concerts at venues such as Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.

MY THOUGHTS ON
MUSIC IN OUR LIVES

I am classically trained in harp performance, piano pedagogy and as a Therapeutic Musician. I give credit for my music education to great teachers in Taiwan and at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee.

Music is a significant part of life's experience. I truly believe music can edify, heal and uplift, from one person's emotions to uniting an entire nation.

While I teach with a sense of fun and excitement that encourages learning, I do so knowing what music means to the well-being of society. I want my students to love and appreciate music, ensuring its importance for a bright future.

Ever since my children entered pre-K, I perform roaming classroom concerts throughout the school to introduce the harp to children. When my colleagues can join in, they bring their passion for the oboe, flute, piano, violin and bassoon, as well. It is important to impress upon young minds the virtue, dignity, and sheer magical power of music to bring joy to the world.

Prepared with music lessons and plenty of practice, my students and I have served the public by performing at libraries and Carnegie Hall, and we will happily continue to do so.

As a piano teacher and therapeutic musician working with the elderly, I often times like to combine these two worlds. Recently, I asked my son's choir director to share their students' lovely voices with others in need at a local retirement home. The residents loved the music and the young musicians received praise from a receptive and attentive audience.

I encourage all musicians to find a school and perform for their students, and if possible, arrange a student concert for the elderly, bringing both old and new generations together.

I believe piano teaching is a trade similar to a doctor, plumber or botanist. There is a depth and professionalism to music that takes years to achieve. On a practical level, it also brings about deep and meaningful insights.

My favorite example is the story of Albert Einstein’s and his frequent “breaks” to play violin. He claimed that his violin gave him access to a dormant creativity that may have been otherwise inaccessible.

I love to organize student recitals and concerts every three to four months and encourage all of my students to attend as many cultural events as they can.

Music makes us become more compassionate and inspired human beings.

Lastly, nothing happens without parental involvement. Thank you to all the parents for your meaningful participation in your child's musical journey!
